The month of May is globally known as Mental Health Awareness Month. We had the pleasure of opening our platform to the beautiful ladies Atishca Makan and Laaiqka Sukaih who shared their mental health journey with us.
The first post of the Mental Health Awareness Month Series I touched a bit on my life with depression. The ups the downs and everything in between. A few years back I was involved in a horrifying car accident where I lost my friends at the scene of the accident. I remember the first 3 years after the accident I would tell every second person I meet about the scene. That was the trauma. I am only realizing now that talking about it then was my cry for help and in a way that was my healing too. A few years later and I don’t talk about it as much as I used to.
I shared some information on what helped me through those times in my life and what keeps me going today. Talking to loved ones, journaling and most important visits to the psychologist when things get tough. Atischca wrote about how grief affected her mental health after the loss of her father. How she found strength in honouring her loved one in giving back through her NGO ,Dressed With Legacy. The NGO aims to memorialize the lives of the fallen by making clothing tags with their legacy on them which she founded with one of her friends. Saaiqka shared how she was in denial and took her mental health lightly. Until she kept having recurring terrifying dreams to a point where she believed which she believed were real. She visited a psychiatrist and was diagnosed with PTSD and Anxiety. Read all about here: https://africansoulgoddess.co.za/blog/2020/05/24/mental-health-awareness-month-anxiety/
